Meet Dr. Fraunfelder

Dr. Frederick W. “Rick” Fraunfelder is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cornea and external eye disease, anterior segment surgery, and ocular oncology. He practices with EyeCare Partners in the St. Louis metropolitan area, where he provides comprehensive medical and surgical eye care with a particular focus on corneal and ocular surface disorders.

Before joining EyeCare Partners, Dr. Fraunfelder spent more than a decade at the University of Missouri, serving as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Director of the Mason Eye Institute. He also held the position of Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. In these roles, he combined clinical care with medical education, research, and the training and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows.

Dr. Fraunfelder has extensive expertise in corneal transplantation, complex anterior segment disease, ocular surface disorders, cataract surgery, ocular oncology, and the medical and surgical treatment of corneal conditions. An accomplished academic physician and researcher, he has authored or co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and three books. His primary research interests include the treatment of surface eye tumors, drug-induced ocular side effects, and vaccine-associated ocular injuries.

With decades of experience in both academic medicine and clinical practice, Dr. Fraunfelder is committed to providing thoughtful, individualized care. He values building lasting relationships with his patients and ensuring they understand their diagnosis and treatment options.
