Femtosecond laser technology is innovative and new but patients looking for a better cataract surgery experience can find it at Ophthalmology Consultants! Our surgeons are some of the first in St. Louis to choose this new technology, insuring the best possible cataract surgery outcome for their patients. This bladeless technology utilizes a laser to perform many of the surgical steps that have always been done by hand, offering more accurate lens placement, a self-sealing incision, reduced trauma to your eye and more predictable visual results. The real-time mapping capabilities of these lasers offer our surgeons the ability to plan and perform each patient’s surgery with individualized specifications. Which Femtosecond laser do the surgeons of Ophthalmology Consultants’ use? Our surgeons operate primarily at the St. Louis Eye Surgery & Laser Center located on the first floor of our Manchester Road office and the St. Charles Surgery Center located in St. Charles, Missouri. Astigmatism

Patients with nearsightedness and farsightedness often also have astigmatism. As astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea; instead of being round like a basketball, the cornea is shaped like a football. This can make your vision blurry. Astigmatism management is a vital new area of cataract surgery. Your vision is potentially affected by two types of astigmatism: corneal and lenticular. Both can be corrected with new astigmatism management tools. The most advanced method to correct pre-existing astigmatism during cataract surgery uses a new type of lens implant which incorporates unique optics to compensate for specific deficiencies in your vision. This lens greatly reduces the need for a second procedure after cataract surgery to correct residual astigmatism. In addition to astigmatism-treating IOLs, astigmatism can be reduced by glasses, contact lenses, and refractive surgery (Lasik or PRK). A limbal relaxing incision (LRI) is a small cut or incision your surgeon makes into your cornea to make its shape rounder and can be done at the same time as the cataract operation or as a separate procedure. Any attempt at astigmatism reduction could result in over- or under-correction, in which case glasses, contact lenses, or another procedure may be needed. Visit Page

    Glaucoma Services

Treating Glaucoma in St. Louis, MO What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve. The optic nerve is important because it carries vision from the eye to the brain. If glaucoma is not controlled, the damage it causes to the optic nerve can lead to blindness. Can Glaucoma Be Controlled? Although there is currently no cure for glaucoma, it can be treated. Glaucoma can usually be controlled with eye drop medicines which lower eye pressure and must be used on a daily basis. However, if medicines are ineffective or lead to unwanted side effects, the doctors at Ophthalmology Consultants can perform a simple, in-office laser treatment called Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) to lower your eye pressure and protect your sight. The doctors at Ophthalmology Consultants will perform a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including automated visual field screening, digital optic nerve photography, and retinal nerve fiber layer laser imaging in order evaluate for and treat glaucoma.
